On the DiPaola parcel Winter Walk out North Great Meadow Road, GMCT’s Ken Etheridge shares his insights as monitor of eagle nests from Middletown and Cromwell to Hartford and Windsor, including the nest hidden in the trees in the background, the new nest in Crow Point Cove, and the nest at far right on the edge of the dike in the Folly Brook Nature Area. The photo was taken in April from a kayak on the high water below the nest. Once a a month Ken and his partner Janet Smith drive up the river to inventory each nest for the DEEP, counting the chicks in each successful nest. Later scientists from the DEEP will climb up to the accessible nests and bring the chicks down to weigh and band them.
